Adopting A Dog – Initial Thoughts

Two months ago I wrote about how we adopted our little monster named Kaya. I introduced her to you and told you the backstory of deciding to get her. So now that we’ve had her for a few months, I wanted to give you all an updated!

I have to admit, the first month with Kaya was so hard. All of our conversations were about her and our relationship definitely went on the back burner. She was chewing things up, being a little too rowdy, and taking up most of our time. As someone who has openly admitted to not wanting kids because I selfishly like my time, this was pretty tough for me.

I don’t want to equate getting a dog to having a child, I KNOW that there is a huge difference. But they are very similar in a lot of ways. Your puppy will wake you up in the middle of the night, you’ll worry about them all day when you’re away from them, they will have accidents and ruin some of your things. They will take up MOST of your time.

I wasn’t loving the experience of having a dog, even though I had wanted one of my own for the past 5 years.

But as we all settled in to our home together, Kaya calmed down a lot. She stopped getting too wild when trying to play and stopped chewing on my stuff. She adapted to waiting for us to wake up in the morning and does so well at the dog park. After the first month of basically disliking this dog, now I love her to death.

And I’m back to equating having a dog to having a child. I now understand how giving up most of your life is worth that love you receive back. Adopting a dog should never be a light decision, it was a huge change for us, but our little family feels so complete now!

  1. Look at that face!! So sweet!! I adopted my pup 2.5 years ago and I still find it to be a love/hate relationship. I love it when she’s cuddly and sweet and playful and sleeping on her back with her paws straight up in the air. I hate it when she goes berserk when something/someone walks by the front window, when she’s drooling all over me and the furniture whenever there’s food around, and more so when she decides to rip up the pillow-top on our mattress (there are 4 different patches I’ve had to sew into our less-than-a-year-old brand-new mattress).

As they say: you just have to grin and bear it sometimes.

  2. My wife used to be absolutely terrified of dogs. She used to jump up on sofa when visiting people with dogs. After eight happy years with our dog Skooby, I am not sure who adopted whom. Skooby is devoted to her and sleeps on the sofa with his head on her lap.
As a side note when my wife’s elder sister visited us from India just few months after we had Skooby, she requested us before coming to keep Skooby in chain. Obviously we did not do it. In fifteen days that she stayed with us Skooby won her heart so much that every time now we talk on phone she inquires about Skooby.
Dogs – just give a little love and it will be returned in abundance.

    1. awww that’s such a great story! I’ve encountered a lot of people afraid of dogs/unfamiliar with them lately and I just want them to spend a day with Kaya to see how wonderful a dog can really be!

  3. My boyfriend and I always talk about adopting a dog but we can barely handle our 3 cats! I’m so glad to hear that you are loving your pup now & getting used to take care of her. ♡

      1. Lol yes, it is maybe too much. 😛 My boyfriend wants a reptile too but I’m afraid one of our cats would harm it! It really is hard work but animals are SO cute ❤

  4. Not having had a puppy in the house for about 6 years, I was shocked at how awful it was when we got Beans last summer. It seems that I had repressed all the negatives and just remembered all the good times (of which they are few). Nearly a year on and I still have days where Beans is like a little demon, and I constantly have to remind myself that she’s still technically a child. Not wanting to have children myself, I understand selfishly loving your time, and dogs (as well as kids) can quickly take over your life. I’m glad to hear you’re starting to find a balance and I’m sure soon the positives will outweigh the negatives. Looking forward to hearing more about Kaya!!

    1. aw thank you!! I wanted a dog for so long so it was quite the shock and I felt so bad that I just didn’t like her lol but puppies teach us patience and things have been getting much better on both her side and mine 🙂

  5. A pet is a huge commitment. One must think long and hard thatvthere will be scarifies if they love their pet. If that doesn’t sound good and one doesn’t live animals they should not adopt a pet. Wonderful post, thsnk you!

  6. My husband & I adopted our first dog in January and the first few months were super hard too! We had both had dogs in our families but it was still hard to adapt and all three of us had to learn to give & take with each other. It’s still hard at times, but it has gotten far better! I’m glad you’ve had a similar experience! 💖

  7. Dogs are a big commitment. But when you come home to a happy face and a wagging tail, its all worth it. How many times have you come home and a human consistently greeted you at the door with hugs and kisses.
