I’ve had a terrible couple weeks of sleep lately where I am falling asleep too early and then waking up at random parts of the night.
When I was younger, someone once mentioned that this is the witching hour and you’re being awoken by all the spiritual activity and there’s significance behind the times you’re being woken up. Wikipedia even describes it as a period of bad luck…which I don’t really need right now.
I used to be almost obsessed with sleep. Especially in my high school or college years, you could almost always find me napping or sleeping until noon when I could. It’s funny how I don’t find it as pleasant anymore. I’m still a very tired person, but sleep has been pretty restless for me since I moved out of my parents house (which was years ago).
It used to bring me a lot of comfort, now it’s just something I try to do because I’m so tired of the day.
There’s really no better way to ruin your day than not sleeping and when it happens for weeks I’m just thrown out of sorts. Whether it’s the witching hour, stress, or just a bad sleep cycle – what are your tips to going back to sleep after being asleep?

Sleepy time tea helps! Also avoiding caffeine at least a couple hours before bedtime.

I always read before bed, it makes my brain tired so I always sleep pretty well. Not sure if that could help you too? π

I gotta get back into that. I’ve been too lazy to read lately which is terrible lol

I was gonna mention reading also. Reading in bed at night, puts me right to sleep.

Iβll try to walk around for a few minutes or I might put on some ocean sounds in the background (thatβs what I did last night)

I’m always afraid to get out of bed because it might make me less tired!

Usually when I wake up Iβll stay awake for hours whether I get out of bed or not. I try to maybe tire myself back out or at least be productive π

I listen to meditation music on Headspace and a guided meditation. I also sometimes take a bath or shower before bed to relax. If all else fails I will take a sleep gummy. haha

I’ve used headspace before! I could see it maybe being good to get me back to sleep as long as I keep headphones by my bed and don’t wake my boyfriend lol

So this is my really random tip. If nothing works and I can’t get sleepy then I count backwards, but I start at a really high number and count by something odd. Like count backwards from 300 by 7s. Or count backward from 200 by 3s. Thinking to get to the answers tires me out but it’s repetitive enough to be boring.

If you’re wide awake you may as well get up and do something I think, not always worth straining to get back to sleep. Also, having your phone by the bed is a big mistake. Bedroom should be tech-free, no blue light or phones. A lot of research says they can disturb sleep.

I always think it would be nice to be productive but I’m so tired I can’t get up, but apparently not tired enough to fall back asleep!

I have suffered from insomnia for years. I don’t have trouble getting to sleep, I have trouble staying asleep. Usually, I wake up about 2:30 or 3:00 a.m. I do a sort of prayer (or meditation)–usually singing a song of praise in my head–to see if I can fall back asleep. If I don’t fall asleep within a few minutes, I start to read (in bed) instead of tossing and turning and getting frustrated and hope I’ll get tired enough to fall asleep. If I wake up around 4:00 or 5:00, I just get up and start the day and hope the next sleep cycle is deeper and more refreshing. I hope you find a solution that works for you soon–it’s miserable being tired all the time. Sending thoughts of peaceful ZZZZs your way!

Thank you! I’m the same, falling asleep is rarely the issue!

I find that a light lavender (or any preferred) scent really helps when I spray it on my pillow as it helps me to relax. Also I love lighting up candles during the festive season as it brings about a cosy vibe to the room. I hope this helps hun x

Whenever I have a proper dinner before an hour/half an hour going to bed, It often gives me a good sleep but sometimes whenever I’m restless or having something going in my mind, it always awaken me during night time! So it’s not witching hours circle sometimes it’s the things and the problems running in the mind that awake us so unconditionally & unexpected sleeping hours! Just relax the mind, listen some good light meditation music at night, free your mind, don’t think much! Have a blessed day & sleep well always! ππ

I’ve been struggling with lack of sleep myself and recently decided to switch back to the 4:4 biphasic cycle. It’s basically 2 naps for 4 hours. Since I can’t seem to stay asleep, that seems like the best route for now.

What time of day to you take the naps?

I was been doing 4 hours at 8am and 4 hours at 8pm, but that hasn’t been working because I can never sleep for the full 4 at 8pm.
So now, I’ve gone to 5 hours at 8am and 3 hours at 8pm. I work from home, so it makes it easier to have a crazy sleep schedule like that.

I’ve never heard of the Witching Hour. Sometimes I randomly wake up & have no idea why… I wonder if it’s the spirits now. I’ll have to look up those specific hours & stuff– how interesting.
Usually, when I can’t get back to sleep I smoke some relaxing strain of weed & read a book in bed until my eyes get heavy again.
