1. Cry about it
Oh yea, I cried. I silently sobbed when they told me my position was eliminated, I cried every time someone said something nice to me. Just feel all your feelings because it sucks and you deserve to let it out.
2. Cut the ties
When you get laid off, your company is pretty much done with you so it’s fine to cut the ties and be done with them as soon as possible. I packed up all my stuff the next day, shipped back my work stuff and signed the agreement as soon as possible.
3. Give yourself a break
You’re going to work for your whole life, you can take a break. Depending on your financial situation, it may not be a long one. But at least try to take a weekend where you’re not worrying about everything that needs to be done in the future.
4. Give yourself a pep talk
Even though lay offs usually aren’t performance based, it can cause a bruised ego. Because they still saw your position at one that could be eliminated, they still saw you as someone who wasn’t really valuable to them anymore. It sucks, but it’s not personal and there are so many other jobs out there who would be lucky to have you. You can do it, you are worthy.
5. Get back out there
It may take some time and that’s okay. Figure out what you want to do and get back out there.
I hope you’re heeding your own advise and taking things in stride. 😉 I’m excited to see what your future holds.

Having been laid off myself, I know exactly how you feel, Rosie. I agree with you. Just allow yourself to feel your emotions an then move on. Make plans for the rest of your life.

These are all great things, especially number three. Job hunting is so stressful as is losing a job. Give yourself some time before you dive head first into that job search.
