If you couldn’t tell by my name, I’m Irish. Technically, half-Irish. So of course, St. Patrick’s day has always held a special day in my heart.
Back in college, my St. Patrick’s Day traditions were probably not what you think. We always had spring break of St. Patrick’s Day so usually I would go down the shore with my whole family including my grandparents and cousins and watch the dinky parade. After my grandma passed away, we all got together for it and rallied my grandpa to go outside. Once they both passed away, the tradition faded out.
St. Patrick’s Day is also my sorority’s founder’s day, I know at this point they’ve been around for over 100 years. I’m pretty far removed from that part of my life now, but I still like to recognize it because that sorority gave me my best friends.
Now I just stick to simple. I’m a vegetarian, so no corned beef for me. But I always bake a loaf of Irish soda bread! It’s something my boyfriend looks forward to every year now which is exciting. I’m not much of a baker, I stick to easy things and then I’ll make the Irish soda bread and I’ve tried my hand at Easter bread a few times.
Do you have any traditions for St. Patrick’s Day?

I’m a quarter Irish. My family does the traditional dinners. Some years, I’ve gotten together with friends on the weekend for the parties. And of course made sure to wear green day of. Sláinte!

Always have to wear green! I grew up with the superstition that if you don’t wear green, you get pinched!

I like it very much but I don’t know how to bake. Can you tell me its recipe?

My grandparents are Irish and like to keep their family traditions alive. My grandma sends handmade cards to everyone in the family and they always made sure we had a green outfit to wear. 💚

Aw love that you always bake your own Irish soda bread! I’ve only tried that for the first time last year. Very yummy! Hopefully you’ll share your recipe with us sometime? 😉

I’m part Irish on my father’s side, but I didn’t really grow up with any traditions since usually we follow the cuisine of our mothers, and she was French Canadian. However, I made a few little traditions of may own, I usually wear green, make leprechaun traps with my grandchildren (no, we’ve never caught one), and I, too, make Irish soda bread with currants. ☘️

Ah making leprechaun traps! I forgot about that, we did that as a kid in school

They are almost impossible to catch, but we keep trying!

I’m some mix of English, Irish, and Scottish on my dad’s side; I’m not sure how much of each or any details therein. St. Patrick’s Day was never a big deal in my family or any of the crowds I run with… but enjoy your bread and have a great day!

My St. Patrick’s day tradition usually revolves around watching college basketball. I went to Michigan State so wearing green is never an issue!
Best,
Casey
