The Hookup On: Vegan A Day

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.

One of my goals for the summer is to eat vegan once a week. I haven’t eaten meat in over 10 years, but I do occasionally eat fish which makes me a “pescatarian”. I’ve dabbled with the idea of going completely vegan, but there are a lot of things I can’t give up – no matter how gross they actually are.

To walk you through one of my vegan days, I start the morning with a vegan smoothie with almond milk, mixed fruit, beets, and kale. Having a smoothie in the morning is kind of a luxury for me because I usually don’t have time to make them.

For lunch, I still want to make sure I’m getting enough protein which I feel is tough as a vegetarian so really tough as a vegan. I put together a chickpea salad with chickpeas, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and some lemon sprinkled over the top with salt and pepper. I have an apple and peanut butter as a snack along with some peanut butter pretzels.

I always feel like dinner is a bit trickier because I want something heavier at dinner time. A yummy vegan rice bowl-style meal is always a go to for me. I usually put quinoa, pinto beans, onions, jalapenos, and corn with a non dairy ranch dressing on top!

Being completely vegan can be hard, it’s good to do a lot of research to see what your best option is when giving up meat and dairy. I gave up meat because of the way animals are treated on the “farms.” I never try to push my dietary lifestyle on anyone, but I do urge everyone to know where you’re getting your food from and what’s really in it.

A great way to see if vegan is right for you is to try it once a week and then up the days. You can also get your nutrient levels tested at www.healthlabs.com to make sure you’re getting enough of what you need to have a happy and healthy body! They test for different allergies and general wellness!

I think testing is a must because a big misconception is that vegan and vegetarians have a healthy diet. This is definitely not always the case. Yes, vegetables are vegan, but so are oreos. It can be cheap and easy to go for carbs or processed food when you cut out meat. I definitely recommend using a test like the ones at www.healthlabs.com to know how you’re doing as a vegan and in what ways you need to step up your food intake. You can even get 25% off with code ROSIE25!

Would you ever try going vegan?! Let me know in the comments!

Blush Voxbox Review

I received a box from Influenster this month for free! It was filled with all types of goodies that could come in handy for wedding season – which is perfect for me because I just so happen to be a bridesmaid this summer. I was super excited about getting some cruelty free products as well!

Cruelty free:

Simple Make Up Remover Wipes

Is there anything better for a lazy girl than make up remover wipes? I have pretty sensitive skin, so Simple is a great brand for gentle products that won’t be too harsh on your skin. Plus they’re cruelty free so I 10/10 recommend ๐Ÿ™‚

Ardell Lashes

I’ve never used fake lashes before!! But I was super stoked to receive these, they look SO natural and aren’t too chunky on my eye lids. They can be a little sticky, but this was also my first time applying lashes and I wasn’t great at it. They are also cruelty free so I would 9/10 recommend ๐Ÿ™‚

Not Cruelty Free:

Pantene Expert Shampoo and Conditioner

I’ve made the switch to sulfate free shampoo and conditioner for the most part, as far as I can tell these are not sulfate free. I don’t wash my hair often so using a sulfate product every once in a while won’t kill me, but Pantene is also not cruelty free. Did it get my hair clean? Yes, but I didn’t notice a huge difference. 4/10 recommend

Secret Clinical Strength Deodorant

I have not made the switch to better-for-you deodorant products. I know I need to. Secret is not a cruelty free company. It worked, it kept me dry and nice smelling – but I am also not one of those people who need extra strength deodorant. It was an okay product. 4/10 recommend.

Perfect Details

Perfectdetails.com sells jewelry and accessories for brides and the wedding party. I received a 15% off coupon, but didn’t buy anything because I’m pretty broke. I might pass it on to my family. The stuff on the website looks cute, unique, and fairly priced for fancier products so I would sort of recommend it.

Are you on Influenster? Did you get this Voxbox – let me know what you think in the comments!

Buying Cruelty Free: Wet N Wild Setting Spray

So I got a free sample of Urban Decay setting spray from Sephora once and didn’t start using it until a year later. Then I was unsure how I ever lived without a setting spray for my make up!!! Like it’s a must. And pretty inexpensive.

I read a post here that recommended Wet N Wild Photofocus Setting Spray. I just so happened to run out of that free sample at the time and basically went out and bought this the next day ๐Ÿ™‚

I have been attempting to make my life as cruelty free as possible. As a vegetarian, I was completely unaware that most of my make up products were tested on animals. I just ignorantly believed that in 2016 most major companies wouldn’t see a need to test on animals anymore.

Is Wet N Wild cruelty free?:ย As a Peta-certified, cruelty-free brand, we’re proud to say we have never and will never test on animals. We also make it a point to work with cruelty-free, third-party vendors. wet n wildยฎ loves our furry, scaly, and feathery friends!

They do also have a large listing of vegan products ๐Ÿ™‚

I snagged this setting spray for $4.99 at Target. I do most of my make up shopping at drugstores because I’m pretty basic, but a lot of those drug store brands aren’t cruelty free so you need to be careful!

All in all, I love this setting spray! Keeps my face on during the work day and stops it from getting overly shiny and oily. It’s a big bottle for such a cheap price and I would definitely recommend!

Buying Cruelty Free: Physician’s Formula

So I recently came across a list of cruelty free make up brands. My brand of make up, Neutrogena, was not on it. I decided to do some more research on it because I had been using this make up for like almost ten years and couldn’t believe that in 2015 they were still testing on animals. Well, they are. One of their branches is moving away from testing on animals, but they are basically not a cruelty free company.

While doing more research, I found that most drug store make up brands are not cruelty free. I’m not super obsessed with make up, but I like what I like and what can get the job done. Leaping Bunny has a great list of resources of make up brands that do not test on animals, but there are certainly brands that are not on this list that are cruelty free.

I chose to try out Physician’s Formula that lists here that they do not test on animals. I bought Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Airbrushing Pressed Powder SPF 30, which I LOVE. Definitely one of the best powders I’ve ever used. It has great coverage and does not look too dusty on your face. It applies well with a powder brush.

I also bought Youthful Wear Spotless Foundation SPF 15. ย This foundation comes in with a cool dropper to control how much you are using. It does come with a brush, but I chose to use a make up sponge because I just think they work better. At first touch, this foundation seems oily but it doesn’t make my face oily. The coverage is not 100%, if you’re looking to hide really dark spots or blemishes this won’t do the trick by itself. That being said, if anyone knows of any good, cheap-ish, and cruelty free concealer (doesn’t have to be Physician’s Formula!) please let me know ๐Ÿ™‚

Overall, I’d recommend these Physician’s Formula products! I’d love to hear from anyone else’s experience with cruelty free make up ๐Ÿ™‚

Cruelty Free – Amuse Bouche Lipstick

I was on Facebook one day and saw a list of cruelty free make up brands. I don’t really put much weight into what I see on Facebook, ย but I didn’t see my make up brand – Neutrogena – on it. I did some more research and found that Neutrogena is NOT a cruelty free company. I guess I just assumed that we had reached a time where everyone figured out it is unnecessary to test on animals. I obviously assumed wrong and so now I’m a search for new make up brands.

That being said, I just received a Voxbox yesterday from Influenster with three amazing lipstick colors! I received these products for free for complimentary testing. They are called Amuse Bouche by Bite Beauty. Bite is a cruelty free company which I was ecstatic to hear!

They smell like citrus and contain 12 edible oils. Two of the colors I received were a little too bright for me, but I like to mix my lipsticks anyway. The color was bold and creamy! I especially like Pepper which is the color to the left. It’s kind of a nude/brown/pink color and I’m loving it. My previous brand of lipstick was Revlon – which, again, is not cruelty free. This lipstick retails for $26 which is a little pricey but not unreasonable considering the essential oils and bright color! Definitely would recommend ๐Ÿ™‚

Stay with me on my journey to find better cruelty free products! Have any of you ever received a Voxbox from Influenster before?

11 Things Vegetarians Are Tired Of Hearing

1. Don’t you miss it?

Not really, no.

2. Oh so you’re not actually a vegetarian?

Yea, technically I’m a pescatarian because I eat fish but then you would start making fun of that too so…….

3. But like what do you eat…

You know all that stuff on your plate that isn’t meat? I eat that.

4. Do you do it for the animals or because you don’t like meat?

For the animals. But also I don’t like meat – does it matter?

5. You know you’re not helping any animals, right?

I’M HELPING MORE THAN YOU ARE

6. Don’t you want to eat this big juicy steak?

No, not really. And I would appreciate you not sticking your food in my face.

7. What happens if you eat meat?

Nothing. Unless I consumed a large quantity and go sick, but most likely nothing.

8. Would you be upset if you accidentally ate meat?

I didn’t do it on purpose and I didn’t continue once I found out so, no.

9. What about bacon!??!?!?

What about it?

10. Oh is that why you’re so skinny?

Not eating meat has very little to do with if you’re eating healthy or not.

11. Your life must suck.

As a vegetarian/pescatarian who DOESN’T shove their lifestyle down other people’s throats, kind of like what you’re doing when you ask these questions, no my life does not suck.
